In established web site development companies, especially those existing since the late 90s, the term webmaster may be used by senior management of the company, and may include usage such as Chief Information Officer. A broader definition of webmaster is a business person who uses online media to sell products and/or services. However,recently, this type of webmaster job function was typically only found working on smaller Web site that could be managed by a single person, or in environments where there was not a great deal of specific job distinctions.
In the early days of the use of the term "webmaster" (a take-off on the term "postmaster", the administrator of an e-mail system), this role encompassed all aspects of planning, coding, production, and user interface. In established web development companies, especially those existing since the 90s, the term webmaster may be used by senior officers of the company, and may include usage such as "Webmaster-in-chief.
On a smaller web site, the webmaster will typically be the person who owns, develops and/or programs the site, in addition to the authoring the content. In larger operations, the webmaster will act as a co-ordinator to the jobs of other people working on the site and is usually an employee of the owner of the Web site, therefore the job of webmaster can also be listed as an occupation.

If the webmaster is hired by a larger company, or promoted to the position, he/she could be doing things ranging from system admin, managing large online projects, and making sure everyone is keeping up with deliverables. A webmaster is the person responsible for designing, developing and maintaining Web site content..
Basic responsibilities of the webmaster include the administration and management of user access rights to different users on web sites and online applications, the look and feel, set up of navigated and in charge of content development. Typically, the webmaster is the person who reads user feedback and complaints about site functionality and helps handle the help desk.
