You don't want to put up a Business Directory site that gets not traffic do you? Right.

Because you know its not worth any time or effort if nobody is going to go there
and the clients you are going to try services to will not want to pay you to be on it right!

And you don't want to spend your time and money on something that's not going to work.  Right?

Why would they do this.  Because nobody has told them 1.  That they need to find out where the traffic, or footfall is and
2.  How to put your site right in the main stream of hungery clients.

In fact you know all about this don't you.  No - Sorry Wrong.  Think how did you find this site, how do you find things on ebay.  You type them into the Search Engines of Directories (Google and Yahoo).  And you do it all the time.

What Keyword Research is all about is just finding out what people are searching for online.  Its that simple.  Just like standing in a shopping mail with a clip board for 5 days and asking people how they look for shops or jeans or anything else.

But with the web of course you can do it on-line and very quickly.  That means you can very quickly work out if your Business Directory idea has legs or not.  If nobody is searching for your idea on "pink penguins" then chances are there is not a market.  The other side to this is, loads of people are searching for "small business".  Does that mean you will do well in that market.  Nope.  Why?

Because its already over saturated.  Even with millions of new web users coming online and upgrading to broadband everyday there are markets that are just too much work to go after.

What you want is to find a niche for your Business Directory.  Where the keywords around your business, service or product can find the balance between good traffic and low or no competition. Its a bit like retail real estate.  You probably can not afford the prices of the high street in a big town but there is plenty for offer in the side roads, still great traffic but low rent and no competitors.

You will see in my Start Off Business Directory Offer that the first thing I talk about is getting traffic and this research is the key.  You just have to find the right Keywords that get traffic and then use your local and national copies of the hard copy Yellow Pages to make sure your Business Directory Idea is sound.  If there are good searches for keywords and around 2500 to 3000 entries in the categories and sub categories of the Yellow pages for your chosen geographical area then you are onto a wining Business Directory Idea.  AND In my offer I guarantee it.

Now you will never hear one of those Graphic Artists or Business Coaches telling you this. They will tell you its black magic.  If fact most of they have no idea about this.  They would have you creating the equivalent of the most beautiful store right in the middle of a client dessert.

But things like this probably hasn't worked for you because your making the same mistake almost every business owners makes at the start (I know I did).

You so most people start a business based on a system and a product that they have no control over.  And do not have the complete plan to put in place straight away!

So everything has to be built, researched and done.  Which takes all your effort, money and time. Sound Familiar?

OK so how can you go out and check this out a bit.  You see there is nothing like doing it yourself.

Well a simple test I use is to just type and idea into Google.  I recently had a client who wanted a Business Directory about Book Keepers in Western Australia.  So off we went to check it out.  Put bookkeepers western australia into the Google Search.  You will come up 7,260 sites and a few ads.  Then check the hard copy Yellow Pages and about 450 with no ads over 5cm.  This showed us we were in the wrong place.  Shows that there are not enough and they do not spend a lot on adverts. 

OK So what do I do now I hear you cry. Well take another route.  In the end we came up with a name based around body and soul.  Still great traffic, still on subject but much less competition in both terms of organic search, the stuff in the middle and adverts the stuff on the top and to the left.

Now the next one we choose, "Carpet Cleaners" and some other sub categories well that was a lot different, many more sites, and page after page of full color ads in the Yellow Pages. 

That was a good Business Directory Niche.

It tells you that there is lots of traffic, because there are loads of sites, true in a lot of cases but not all.  It also tells you that its quite profitable because there are loads of ads.  People do not put ads in places where they do not make money online, and in fact Google would drop them if nobody clicked on them - we'll come to that in lesson 5.  And there is loads of competition, in this case I could have probably beaten them but they would have kept on coming.  Day after day. 

 

Now just two quick extras before we finish up.  You know I keep on spouting on about 95% of websites do not make and money etc.  How do I know that.  Well apart from all the original research, daily interaction with website owners and masses of reports I get sent I can tell because I use a simple tool.  Its called the Alexa toolbar.  If you grab the name of any site you think it good and drop it into the Alexa tool (www.alexa.com) you with see a view of how much traffic that site gets.

Here are the basic things you need to look at - If the site is ranked higher than 500,000 (thats 500k to 17 million) its in the 95% of sites that gets very little traffic.  If its lower (lower being better) than that its good traffic, sub 300,000 is top 3% in the world.  And what is really important to realise is that at the closer to 1 you are the more logarithmic the traffic. Moving from 200k to 100k is not twice as good its 10 times as good and that gets more and more until number 1 (normally yahoo).

So again as a test.  1.  If you have your own site stick it in and see (Warning:you might not like see) 2. Try a few of your colleagues and competitions sites - it really is amazing in terms of what you thought was a "good" site and a 'bad site".  You may also notice that on my "20 Page Starter Offer" I have guaranteed you a sub 500,000 listing in Alexa .
