I’m glad you asked. And please let me explain. 

For many years, I was Sales Executive for IT Companies. When I finally worked out that being away from my family for 12 hours a day often for 6-7 days a week wasn’t a job for grown-ups, even being paid ridiculous amounts of money, I left and decided to start out in the internet  and direct response business for myself.

I knew very little about actually building websites, even though I had used them to market for years, but I soon developed a product , and immediately threw myself into trying to sell this product online to the mass market.

And I made a big, big mistake.

I took advice on marketing from so-called 'experts' who told me to do lots of branding and 'image' marketing with the website they were employed to build for me. They said - these blue haired pony-tailed, leather jacketed 'account executives' in the web advertising industry - that I needed to 'have a graphically beautiful site' it needed lots of pages for contact info and other stuff,  I needed 'establish my market position' on the web with things that flashed, and 'I had to be patient and await the search engines to find me'.

So I took their advice. I spent thousands on a 'market survey'. I got a graphic design company to design me an impressive-looking logo, letterheads, lots of 'corporate branding'. I paid for an expensive site to be put up with lots of things that flashed.  And luckily at the some time went of and got some funding and ran some ads in the local papers.

Month after month, I waited for all this 'gee whizz' stuff to start working. The online forums I had remained stubbornly silent. I got no online orders, the hits on the site seemed to resemble the number of times I had gone to look at the site.  To my horror, after a few months I realized I'd spent money on exactly the wrong kind of marketing for my small business.

In my six months, I flushed more than $50,000 down the toilet on marketing that simply didn't work.   I lost my backer who was giving me marketing funds but stopped when I had to report no on line leads.  And By then I was desperate. I was angry because I'd trusted these idiot 'experts'.
